It has been a long time coming, but the news is finally in that Bingo.com have now received their “White Listed” status in Malta, which basically means they are now legally allowed to advertise their wares within the UK. Due to a change in the gambling act 2005 in the UK, as from 1st September 2007, an advertising ban was placed on all online bingo sites registered outside the European Economic Area………..at the time this was a blow for a lot of sites on the World Wide Web, but it was good news for bingo players far and wide, because it meant that stricter controls were placed on bingo sites, as they need to pass stringent procedures to get licensed and receive the white listed status.

Bingo.com Operations Ltd, a subsidiary of Bingo.com said, “The licence will allow Bingo.com to legally advertise in the UK under the ‘white listed territory’ legislation introduced by the British government. We are very pleased to have received an LOI from the Malta Lotteries and Gaming Authority,”
Tarrnie Williams, Bingo.com’s CEO, went on to say, “Online bingo is booming in the United Kingdom and we are excited to have the opportunity to strengthen our position as one of the premiere online bingo destinations for European players. Bingo.com will now have a full breadth of marketing opportunities available from which to promote our brand and attract new bingo visitors to our gaming and entertainment system. While we continue to develop support for different currencies and different languages around the world, the UK is a critical market for our success.”
It is not a five minute job for an online bingo site to try and get a license in Malta, as this does take many months, at the moment licences are currently taking between 6 to 9 months to be granted due to a back log and they are only done so if the bingo site in question passes their vigorous tests and comply to their legislation and guidelines.
EU or White Listed online bingo site licensed areas currently include, Gibraltar, Alderney, Malta and Cyprus, all bingo sites licensed outside these area’s are considered (non white listed sites) and cannot legally advertise within the UK. You can usually find out where an online bingo site you are playing at it licensed by taking at look at their “about us” page.
