Ireland Revises Bingo Laws

Margaret Richie, Northern Ireland’s Minister for Social Development, has just announced that a comprehensive review of the region’s bingo laws will take place. The decision to revise the laws is long overdue, according to industry experts, who state that the laws have not been amended since 1985.

New laws that would allow bingo halls to open on Sunday were planned but never enacted. In 2006, such laws should have been passed, but the region’s return to devolution halted the process.  Currently, Northern Ireland’s laws cannot keep up with the modern gambling world and must be updated before the country is left behind.

With online bingo changing the face of the gambling industry, countries cannot afford to be held back by antiquated laws. Online bingo and of course it’s free counterpart, free online bingo allow individual to play any time they choose so land-based halls should conform to this level of convenience. Otherwise, they could continue to lose business.

“The gambling market has moved on,” says Richie. “There are new products and new ways of gambling that the current law never envisaged”.

Northern Ireland’s bingo industry should be regulated effectively, in order to keep up with the fast-paced world of online gambling and its rapid advancement. Many industry insiders also believe that Ireland could stand to benefit greatly from entering the online bingo market. However, current laws restrict online gambling activity, as well.

As the bingo industry continues to expand at a rapid rate, Ireland has finally decided to update gambling laws which restrict individuals from playing bingo on Sundays.
